An exceedingly rare and early brant circa 1890 used on Portsmouth Island near Ocracoke Island. At one time, Portsmouth Island was a bustling seaport that supported a community of homes, a general store, a post office and a church. It has been uninhabited for many years and is operated as a historic site by the National Park Service. Guides came from nearby communities during the winter months to take hunting parties. Some also worked at the Life Saving Station that existed on the island. It is known that a number of guides from mainland Carteret County were included in that group.
